Five things agency leaders need to be preparing for now
Few technologies have transitioned from obscurity to implementation as rapidly as Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI).
Seemingly matching its pace has been the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) with its Memorandum聽M-24-10 from March 2024. OMB聽M-24-10 established requirements for AI governance, innovation, and risk management, mandated federal agencies to identify and remove barriers to AI adoption, and set an aggressive 60-day deadline for most to appoint a Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO).
Given the remarkable pace at which AI technologies are advancing, CAIOs and their agencies are finding themselves in the unusual yet exciting position as early adopters.
Historically, governments have always relied on the private sector to blaze the trail ahead, to work out the kinks, discover where the landmines were buried, and provide models for optimum deployment efficiency and value. But not in this case, where even GenAI developers and solution providers are struggling to keep up with this rapidly evolving technology.
To help CAIOs and agency leaders get out ahead of these issues, we鈥檝e come up with a list of five things we believe they should be thinking about now to lay the groundwork for OMB聽M-24-10 compliance and successful GenAI adoption.
